When it comes to skin care goals, the words “glowing”, “radiant” and “supple” seem to globally rank at the top of women’s minds. In midlife, achieving these skin care goals can become your reality. Good midlife skin care and healthy lifestyle choices can delay natural aging and prevent various skin problems. Get started with these easy, no-nonsense tips.
Exfoliate – A Refreshing Start to Good Skin Care
Healthy skin needs a good exfoliation from time to time. This keeps skin smooth and ready to absorb the products you put on it. Here are a few different ways to exfoliate:
Body Scrub – using a scrub with rounded particles is a good way to exfoliate. Use a circular motion when applying and don’t rub too hard…light fingers here. One with charcoal is an excellent choice.

Microdermamitt – This mitt sold exclusively on Amazon is so easy to use, lasts for six months and you need nothing but water and your hand to achieve amazing results. While you are in the shower, simply wet the mitt, slip it over your hand and use long firm strokes in an upward motion. You can use it on your legs, arms, chest, belly and butt! Your skin will feel softer and smoother the very first time you use it! Once your skin is exfoliated, your lotion will glide on and absorb quickly into your skin. I use the mitt twice a week before applying other products.

Dry Brushing – A great technique that also helps to drain the lymphatic system. Prior to showering, use a brush in long strokes over the body. Starting with your legs and working your way up, always brushing toward your heart.
Moisturize – Blending Lotion and Oils for Radiant Skin
After exfoliating, shaving and exposure to the summer elements, your skin will appreciate some extra care from a great lotion. My all-time favorite brand is Hempz. Vegan, cruelty free and it smells amazing. I started out a few years ago using the original and recently switched to the Age defying lotion. A little goes a long way. Your skin will feel hydrated and look firmer. Hempz is made from 100% pure hemp seed oil containing fatty acids, amino acids, natural protein, vitamins and nutrients for healthier, younger looking skin.

I blend my Baby Love oil from Cypress Skincare and my rosehip oil from GoPure Beauty with my lotion. Talk about a powerhouse of moisture for your skin…WOW. Thanks to the almond, coconut, jojoba, olive and hemp oils in Baby Love, along with the rosehip oil, my skin feels incredible. When I touch my arms or legs, they feel supple and smooth.
After showering, I use 2 pumps of lotion with 6 drops of the blended oils for my arms and the same for each leg!
A couple of days a week, I use the Hempz lotion mixed with a dab of Arbonne Self Tanning lotion. I love the sun kissed look without the damage.

Protect with Sunscreen – The Ultimate Skin Care
I have to admit, I love to have a little color to my summer skin. Mostly, I achieve that through self tanner. But when I do get sun, I take it slow and always use sunscreen. 30 SPF up to 50 SPF depending on how long I am in the sun. I also reapply after a swim or walk. I love the smell of Banana Boat sunscreen. Reminds me of the Caribbean Islands.
On a daily basis, I use Trinny London BFF cream with SPF 30 on my face. This is the first face product with SPF I found that does not burn my eyes.

To protect your skin, it is recommended to use a mineral based sunscreen (choose a product with active ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) that is SPF 30 or higher and apply it as the final step to your skin care routine every morning. Mineral sunscreen is a physical barrier, it should be applied as the last step before makeup because skin care actives you apply after won’t penetrate.
Try Organic Castor Oil
Thanks to the Egyptians, we know the benefit of Castor Oil for our hair and skin. Here are few examples of the benefits of using castor in your midlife skin care routine:
Under Eye Circles and Dark Spots
Dark circles under my eyes are the number one reason I use Castor oil. It is super hydrating and keeps my allergy dark circles at bay.
Castor oil is said to help lighten dark spots on the skin when mixed with lemon juice and honey. Apply it to the spots and let sit for 15 minutes or longer.
Castor Oil Delays Skin Aging
Castor oil contains antioxidants, fatty acids, and other nutrients. It improves the production of natural proteins known as collagen or elastin to help prevent prevents wrinkles and fine lines. Castor oil also tightens the skin. Blend a few drops of castor oil with your favorite facial oils.
Helps to Improve Skin Texture and Complexion
The fatty acids in castor oil improve the skin texture. When castor oil is applied to the face, it softens and smooths the facial skin. These fatty acids also improve skin complexion because the castor oil penetrates the skin tissues to make them healthy and strong.

A few things to Remember:
Anything you put on your skin will be absorbed. Look for organic, vegan and cruelty free products to help your skin glow.
Light fingers when applying anything to your skin. Blot with a towel when you are finished in the shower – don’t rub.
Use a jade roller or learn a facial massage technique.
Everything you put in your body reflects in your skin. Drink your water, eat healthy fats, limit sugar and alcohol.
Get your sleep!

I could not agree more. There is so much we can do from the inside out!

Thank you, Kim, for all the skin tips! May I mention a caution regarding dry brushing? In my experience, dry brushing caused my spider veins to become varicose veins. I read before starting that if you have varicose veins don’t dry brush. I didn’t have varicose veins but now I do. The back of my legs are horrible. Be cautious!
Terry, I had not heard that. Thank you so much for sharing. We should all do research before starting something new.

I never knew about castor oil. I have trouble with dark circles so I’ll definitely test it out!
Here’s another type that I got from my dermatologist. If you suffer from season allergies and you take over the counter allergy meds, you should take them 2 x’s per day. This helps with the blood flow and oxygen around your eyes.
If you are going to try out the castor oil, give it a good three months or more. I am about half way through a large bottle and starting to notice some changes. I even have a bit of lower lash growth!
Thanks,
Kim
